eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) / FGA × 100

Example

A player with 8 FGM (3 of which are 3PM) on 15 FGA: (8 + 0.5 × 3) / 15 = 9.5 / 15 = 63.3%.

Why it matters

For perimeter-heavy players, eFG% can be 5–10 percentage points higher than FG%. Compare both to spot floor-spacers vs. inside scorers.

In depth

Effective Field Goal Percentage fixes a flaw in raw FG%: a player who shoots 5-of-10 from three ends up with the same FG% as one who shoots 5-of-10 inside the arc, even though the first scored 50% more points. eFG% credits the extra value of the three.

eFG% ignores free throws — use TS% if you want a fully unified shooting metric.
