TOV%Turnover Percentage
TOV% estimates what percentage of a player’s possessions ended in a turnover — controlling for usage.
Formula
TOV% = TO / (FGA + 0.44 × FTA + TO) × 100Example
A guard with 38 TO on 188 FGA + 50 FTA: 38 / (188 + 22 + 38) = 38 / 248 = 15.3%.
Why it matters
TOV% is the fairest way to compare ball-handlers across roles — it asks "of every 100 things this player did with the ball, how many ended badly?"
In depth
Raw turnovers favor low-usage role players (you can’t turn it over if you never have it). TOV% normalizes by possessions, so a high-usage point guard at 12% is doing better than a low-usage wing at 18%.
TOV% is one of the four factors of basketball success. League-wide TOV% sits around 13–14%; below 12% is excellent ball control.
